Girls U-14 soccer team rolls on, 1-0

The Concord-Carlisle GU-14-I Patriots played in Melrose on Saturday with the temperature at the start of the game at 38 degrees and the wind blowing a steady thirty miles an hour. Despite starting against the wind, Concord-Carlisle worked the ball up the left side of the field early in the first half. Tara Callahan made a perfect centering pass from left wing to Kim Bauer at the left side of the goal. Instead of shooting, Bauer deftly passed the ball to her right wing Kelly Robb, who drove the ball home for the only goal of the game.

For the rest of the game, the Concord-Carlisle defense protected the lead with Ellen Berndtson reversing the direction of play on a number of drives by Melrose. Kylie Duff, Hannah Brady and Dana Tsakos also held their ground whenever the Melrose players advanced the ball into their territory. Whitney Sharpe stepped up the level of her play on the forward line throughout the game.

Keepers Becca Perry (twelve saves in the first half) and Robb (eight saveds in the second half) combined for the Patriot's first shut-out of the young season.
