Sixth-grade girls rack up two wins
The Concord-Carlisle, sixth-grade Girls Traveling Basketball Team played their best games of the season in defeating tough Waltham and Somerville squads.
In a Saturday home game, C-C rallied to defeat Waltham 20-17. Every member of the team played aggressively, challenging the ball and refusing to give up any easy shots. The score was close most of the way, with the contest tied 14-14 after three quarters. C-C found itself down by one, with minutes to play, but scored two critical baskets and used full court pressure to shut down Waltham the rest of the way.
Allie Robbins turned in a great performance, playing the entire game and dominating the boards with 14 rebounds. Samantha O'Keefe and Sarah Churchill led all scorers with eight points each, in addition to forcing some important turnovers. Julie EIlenberger turned in her best defensive performance of the year, while Courtney Haley constantly challenged the Waltham players down low. Kirsten Kester added several key second half buckets and led C-C's press defense in the last two minutes.
C-C then traveled to Somerville and won convincingly, 27-19, against a team that beat them in overtime earlier this year. Although the Somerville team had sixteen players to just seven for C-C, the locals dominated both defense and rebounding, holding Somerville to just five points in the first half and then cruising to victory.
Playing the point, O'Keefe broke down the defense with nifty dribbling and passing, while dropping in a game-high 13 points. Kester caused numerous problems for the opposition, forcing turnovers and constantly challenging the ball. Robbins and Amy Coles owned the boards and added great help defense down low. Coles also had two buckets. Courtney Haley forced several turnovers and contributed additional rebounds, while Churchill played her usual strong game with eight points and a number of steals. Ellenberger, playing limited minutes due to illness, added two points and completed C-C's best team effort of the season.
