Carlisle Police Department launches gun take back/buy back program
In a joint effort to raise awareness and prevent gun violence, the Carlisle Police Department and the First Religious Society of Carlisle’s Social Action Committee will host a gun take back/buy back program on Saturday, March 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Between those hours, residents can come to the Carlisle Police Department and drop off their unwanted guns and ammunition or can call the police station and arrange for officers to come to your home in Carlisle and pick-up your unwanted gun(s) and ammunition. Residents who are not available to participate on March 17 may also call the Carlisle Police Department and arrange for an alternative time for Carlisle Police Officers to come to your home and pick up any unwanted gun(s) and ammunition. The Carlisle Gun Take Back Program will offer residents $50 in cash for each gun turned in, as long as funds remain. All guns must be unloaded with ammunition separate. The take back/buy back program is anonymous. Guns will be accepted regardless of whether they are registered or unregistered—no questions asked. All guns will be destroyed.
Police Chief John Fisher said this is something he had been planning to do in April but the program timing moved forward in response to the Parkland School Shooting on Febuary 14. To date, residents have been able to bring unwanted guns and ammunition to the station to be destroyed or arrange for officers to pick up the weapons at home. According to Fisher, roughly 20 guns are turned in each year. He hopes the buy back program will get even more unwanted guns out of Carlisle. ∆
